ISS had a strong international presence since it has been established in 1951. It has been a member of the International Sociological Association (ISA) from 1950 onwards and its members have represented India in ISA’s executive and as its officers since its inception. G. S. Ghurye was a member of the ISA Executive twice – in 1950–2 and 1953–6. D. P. Mukerjee became a member for the years 1956–9, and later Vice President from 1959 to 1962. M. N. Srinivas was a member from 1970 to 1974, Ramakrishna Mukerjee from 1974–8, Leela Dube from 1978–82, S. C. Dube from 1982–6. T. K. Oommen was in ISA Executive between 1986–90 and was ISA President from 1990-1994. Sujata Patel was in ISA Executive from 1998-2002 and was its Vice President (National Associations) from 2002-2006. Ishwar Mody was in the ISA executive from 2010-2014.
Sociologists from India have maintained a strong presence at the ISA World Congresses and at its World Forums. The participation of Indian sociologists has been increasing every year and on an average more than 150 have presented papers. They have also been elected as officer bearers in various Research Committees of the ISA.
Sociologists from India have also individually built strong international linkages with colleagues in various parts of the world by participating in international conferences and through research collaborations.
The Society has signed MoUs with 4 international associations to build a continuous exchange of information, ideas and vision on the profession, research and publishing activities and conferences promoted by these associations.

In its various conferences the ISS has always had a special session on international trends in sociology and invited representatives from various national and regional associations to participate in these plenaries.
