Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Malik is an independent sociologist with a PhD in Consumerism and Religion: Changing Lifestyle and Identity among Muslim Youth. His research spans digital cultures, youth identities, and the sociology of religion, alongside emerging interests in ethnomusicology, especially folk music in Kashmir. He has participated in and presented at various workshops/conferences on music, culture, and identity, and his current work explores how consumer practices and technological mediation shape intimacy, alienation, and everyday life in contemporary Indian society. He is presently working on the broader theme of sociological analyses of the changing dynamics of social relationships with the coming of A.I.

Biographical Info

Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Malik is a sociologist whose research explores the intersections of consumerism, religion, and identity, with a particular focus on Muslim youth in Kashmir. He earned his PhD in Sociology from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, with a dissertation titled Consumerism and Religion: Changing Identity and Lifestyle among Muslim Youth. He also holds an M.Phil. from IGNOU, where he examined the commercialization of gift exchange among Kashmiri Muslims.

Dr. Malik has published widely on themes of urbanization, social movements, armed conflict in Kashmir, and the socio-religious dimensions of consumption. He has presented papers at major national and international conferences, including the All India Sociological Conference and seminars organized by Jamia Millia Islamia, MANUU, and BBAU Lucknow.

Alongside his academic pursuits, Dr. Malik has engaged in fieldwork on Transgenders in Kashmir, minority discourses, and emerging lifestyle transformations. He has also completed several research methodology and ethnographic training programmes, including workshops at CSDS, TISS, and Jamia Millia Islamia. Currently, he serves as a Forester in the J&K Forest Department, while continuing his research interests in sociology, consumer culture, and the changing dynamics of identity in South Asia with the coming of A.I.
