Dr Anil Kumar is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, India. His scholarship brings together the disciplines of sociology, philosophy, religion, gender, sexuality, and socio-legal studies, reflecting an interdisciplinary engagement with questions of ethics, culture, and social justice.

He holds degrees in Social Sciences and Sociology from the University of Jammu, and advanced qualifications in Philosophy and Religion, culminating in an MPhil and PhD from the School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The University Grants Commission, New Delhi, awarded him the Junior Research Fellowship in Sociology and Women’s Studies.

Before joining the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dr Kumar taught Sociology at Miranda House, University of Delhi; the Department of Higher Education, Government of Jammu and Kashmir; and the Central University of Kashmir.

His research and publications explore the intersections of sexuality, morality, and society. He has authored numerous journal articles and edited the volume Women, Gender and Justice: Issues and Perspectives. His research collaborations include projects on workplace and domestic violence, gendered experiences of health and labour, and the translation of key sociological texts into Dogri under the National Translation Mission of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. He currently leads an ICSSR-sponsored project on the social and health outcomes of improved water access under the Jal Jeevan Mission in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.

Dr Kumar also contributes to the Global Sexuality and Gender Research Network and Project at the School of Social Work, University of Washington, advancing international research on sexuality, wellbeing, and inclusion.
