Brief Bio

I, Dr. Vimal Kumar Lahari, am an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, India. I hold distinguished academic degrees including a Ph.D., UGC-Post Doctoral Fellowship, and D.Litt. With over twenty-two years of extensive experience in teaching, research and institutional responsibilities, I have been deeply engaged in advancing sociological scholarship and pedagogy.

My major areas of academic interest and specialization include the Sociology of Religion, Sociological Theory, Rural Sociology, and the Sociology of Marginalized and Tribal Communities. Within these domains, I have authored and edited several scholarly books, notably Samajik Janankiki (2024) and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar: A Warrior of Emancipation (2018). My research papers have been published in UGC-CARE listed and international journals, focusing primarily on tribal identity, social justice, cultural transformation and rural development from a sociological perspective.

I have successfully led multiple research projects sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and the Institution of Eminence, BHU, dealing with themes such as tribal continuity, Dalit movements, rural social structures and processes of social transformation. In addition, I have supervised several Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral scholars, organized national seminars, workshops and memorial lectures and delivered invited talks at various national and international academic forums..

I have been associated with the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla and am a Life Member (No. 3700) of the Indian Sociological Society (ISS), where I have been actively participating in a wide range of academic, research-oriented, and institutional activities over the years.

Through my sustained academic commitment, research insight and institutional leadership, I continue to contribute meaningfully to contemporary sociological discourse-particularly in the areas of identity, inclusion, equality and sustainable social transformation.
