Dr. Khwaja Mohammed Ziyauddin, Head of the Department of Sociology, School of Arts & Social Sciences at Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad, brings a wealth of experience and education to his role. For over two decades, his academic journey has included teaching at prestigious universities such as Jamia Millia Islamia, Hamdard University and National Institute of Social Defence, GoI, Delhi, before joining MANUU in 2007. He holds degrees in Sociology from Jamia Millia Islamia, an M.Phil from JNU, and a PhD from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, Delhi. His research writings focused on health experiences, sanitation and occupation, citizenship, gender politics, Sociology of Minorities and Dalits, urban segregation, exclusion and inclusion of marginalised communities, etc. A few of his books are; Dimensions of Social Exclusion: An Ethnographic Exploration, CSP, UK (2009); Muslim Scavengers in India: Perception and Perspectives of Social Exclusion (Germany-2012); Muslims of India: Exclusionary Process and Inclusionary Measures (editors) by Manak Publication (2012); Reading Minorities in India: Forms and Perspectives (2022) by Rawat Publications; Sociology of Health in a Dalit Community: Axes of Exclusion, Cambridge Scholars Publishing-UK (2024); and Occupational Caste Groups’ Illness and Health in India: Lessons from the Lives of Conservancy Workers by Springer Nature (2025).
Currently, he is working on two upcoming manuscripts: Sociology of Subaltern Communities: Revisiting Dalits, Minorities and Tribal Studies in South India by Rawat Publications (2025-under Publications); & Muslim Lives, Health Disparities, and Exclusion: A South Indian Perspective (Routledge- under communication)
Ziyauddin has also completed research projects funded by the ICSSR and the UGC, & International Bodies.
He is an alumnus of the International Visitors Leadership Programme (IVLP-2019) of the Department of State, United States of America. He served as the first National Convener of RC-26 on Minority Studies, Indian Sociological Society (ISS); an editorial committee member for the ‘Journal of Exclusion Studies,’ Indonesian Journal of Islamisation Studies (INJAS), Indonesia & Bhartiya Samajshastra Sameeksha by ISS; and Editorial Committee advisory member of Explorations—E-journal of Indian Sociological Society.
Ziyauddin is a profound speaker who has delivered over a hundred invited lectures in various national and international forums. He also contributes by writing opinion pieces on different web portals and pages. He is also a Co-founder of ‘The Democracy Dialogue, India”.
