A life member of ISS, ISA, and NWISA, she is actively involved in academic research and community advocacy. Her work bridges sociology, policy, and activism for inclusive social change.

Lakshana Gupta is an Indian sociologist, researcher, and advocate for transgender rights, based in Jammu and Kashmir. With a Master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Jammu and a strong foundation in gender, education and cultural studies. Currently engaged in doctoral research, her Ph.D. work focuses on gender diversity, social marginalization, and identity politics.
A prolific academic, she is a UGC-NET JRF awardee in Sociology and has qualifiedGATE,JK SET , andCTET. Her scholarly contributions include presentations at international conferences, such as the 5th ISA Forum of Sociology in Morocco, and publications in peer-reviewed journals addressing the intersection of gender, education, and policy.
Lakshana is a Gender Fellow at Himachal Queer Foundation and a participant of the prestigious Ambedkar Summer School. Her published research spans transgender issues, sociolinguistics, and environmental justice. She has contributed book chapters, opinion pieces in newspapers, and actively engages in academic peer review, serving as a reviewer for the International Journal of Education, Culture and Society and the Asian Journal of Education and Social Studies.
She is a life member of reputed professional bodies such as the Indian Sociological Society (ISS), North-West Indian Sociological Association (NWISA), and Sociological Society Himachal Pradesh, and a member of research committees on Gender Studies, Sociology of Sports, and Women, Gender & Society under ISS and ISA.
Lakshana’s work is deeply interdisciplinary blending sociology, folklore, education, and digital humanities with a commitment to advocating for equity, inclusivity, and systemic reform through research, teaching, and policy engagement.
