A passionate pedagogue and researcher who believes in teaching for social transformation and in nurturing critical and analytical minds. Currently she is Professor and Head, Department of Sociology, K C College, and Dean, Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies at HSNC University, Mumbai. Her research interests include Gender Studies in particular issues of feminist pedagogy, feminist resistance and feminist jurisprudence. Her publications include ‘Doing Sociology of Gender in the Classroom: Re-imagining Pedagogies’ published by Sage, a chapter on ‘Transforming the Sociology Classroom: Implementing a Critical Feminist Pedagogy’ in an edited volume (Gita Chadha and M T Joseph (Eds), 2018) published by Routledge, ‘Sexual Harassment is endemic in academic spaces: An Insider’s perspective’ in Economic and Political Weekly, ‘Gendered Dimensions of Media: Insights from Within’ (EPW) and ‘Disrupting the Gender Binary: Queering Feminist Pedagogy’ in an edited volume (Anu Aneja, 2019) published by Routledge. Her recent publications include Fostering Gender Just and Emancipatory Campuses in HEIs: Interrogating the role of Gender Cells and ICs published in Sociological Bulletin and a co-authored article on Matchmaking in digital spaces: A study of matrimonial websites and dating apps in India published in ISS e-journal Explorations and one on ‘The conundrum of being a feminist pedagogue in the Gender Studies Classroom’ in Springer edited volume on Hundred Years of Sociology in India.
She has contributed extensively to curriculum design and development especially in the field of Feminist Sociology and has been involved for two decades in creating a gender just and emancipatory space on campus. Among her several meaningful initiatives in this direction, include a Certificate Course in Gender Studies to help build a critical feminist perspective among students, setting up a Legal Cell, a first of its kind initiative for the undergraduate colleges in Mumbai, to provide free legal counseling to students and staff members on issues of domestic violence and sexual harassment.
