Dr. R. Maruthakutti is an ICSSR Senior Fellow at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, Tamilnadu. Formerly, as Professor and Head, Department of Sociology, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu and also the Convenor of Research Committee 03 (RC03, Economy and Society, Indian Sociological Society during the period between 2020 – 2024). Dr. Maruthakutti has carried out very important and creditable research on working class families; mainstream and transitional societies including tribal societies; gerontology; and women employment. Equipped with the network framework, he proceeded to map out the social network of senior citizens and their overall support system. He has presented research papers at International forums like the World Congress of Gerontology, Adelaide (1997), Rio de Janerio (2005), DICGF Conference, Taiwan (2013) and World Congress of Sociology, Durban (2006), Yakohama, Japan (2014); also presented 24 papers in the national level conferences. Further, he has published 27 publications in refereed journals. He has been awarded three major research projects from World Bank assisted FREEP, UGC and ICSSR and also submitted three minor research projects. To his credit, he earned Commonwealth Fellowship and visited University of Wales, Bangor, UK during 2002-2003.
Tirunelveli
Dr. R. Maruthakutti got his Master’s, M.Phil and Doctoral degrees in Sociology from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He started his teaching career in Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and served for Twenty Seven Years. Also worked as ‘Researcher and Team Leader’ in UNDP Project on ‘Demographic Transition in Tamil Nadu during 1993- 1994.
As a research supervisor, successfully guided 14 Ph.D scholars and 11 of them have been awarded their degrees while the remaining three have submitted their thesis.
Also served in administrative capacities (Additional Charge in Manonmaniam Sundaranar University) as Research Coordinator (2006- 2009), Additional Controller of Examinations (2013-2014), Director- Research (2015-17), Dean, Faculty of Arts (2019-2020) and Registrar -in- Charge (2021-2022).
He secured national and international fellowships, collaborative research visits, participated and presented papers in international conferences and visited Australia, UK, Brazil, Taiwan, South Africa and Japan. He has published several papers in professional journals and edited a book.
