I did MPhil and PhD from Delhi School of Economics under the guidance of Prof. MSA Rao and Prof. Sharit K Bhowmik, and taught Sociology in the Department of Sociology, North Bengal University, for 40 years, since 2025. I was a C’Wealth Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Sussex (1991-92) and a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Wollongong. I have been a visiting faculty at the University of Economics, Prague, CSSS, JNU, Department of Sociology, Delhi University. I am the editor of the peer-reviewed journal Social Trends. I write research articles for academic journals and write poems, stories and novels in Bengali. I have published more than 60 research articles (some of them in EPW) and six books (two of which are monographs. My research interests are (1) Theoretical Sociology, (2) Gender, (3) Urban Sociology, (4) Tribal Studies, and (5) Sociology of Everyday Life. I have served as the Convener of the RC 28, Sociology of Everyday Life of the ISS for two consecutive terms (2021-2025).
