I retired as Professor of Sociology at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), where I taught from 1969 to 2002. I received my B.A. in Sociology in the United States, followed by an M.A. from the Delhi School of Economics, and Ph.D. from AMU. My academic interests and research have focused on Gender Studies, Social Stratification, Social Change, and Future Studies.
My engagement with fieldwork dates to my undergraduate studies in the United States, where I conducted empirical research on Indian students living in the U.S. and carried out a field study of the Amish community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. These early experiences shaped my long-term commitment to field-based sociological research.
During my tenure at AMU, I restructured and introduced new curricula to keep pace with evolving developments in sociology. I conducted research on marginalized women in Delhi, Muslim women in Aligarh, and families affected by communal riots. My research findings were presented at national and international conferences, including the World Congress of Sociology (New Delhi), conferences in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Mexico, and the All-India Sociological Conference, where I was invited to speak on Indian Society: Futuristic Perspectives. I was also invited to national and international interdisciplinary international forums, including the Christian–Islamic Conference on Peace for Humanity in Vienna, and chaired technical sessions on issues such as family planning and women entrepreneurs and development.
I organized national seminars at AMU, notably The Relevance of Sociology: The Indian Scene, and received research grants from the University Grants Commission, the Indian Council of Social Science Research, and Aligarh Muslim University. I supervised M.Phil. and Ph.D. research and was actively involved in the Indian Sociological Society, serving as an Executive Member. My publications and conference participation formed an integral part of my academic engagement during my years at AMU.
After retirement, I continued my academic involvement in India by joining the Department of Social Work at Maulana Azad Urdu University, Hyderabad, where I developed the syllabus for social work and played a key role in upgrading the department library with relevant textbooks and recent publications. Following my move to Canada, I delivered a lecture series at Carleton University, Ottawa (2013–2015) as part of its Learning in Retirement Program. I now lead a retired life while continuing to mentor students, scholars, and friends in research and academic writing whenever they seek my guidance.
