Biographical Info

Anjana Mangalagiri is an educationist and Senior Fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences, New Delhi. She has nearly four decades of national and international professional experience in educational planning and policy making, intersecting with social development, focusing on the education rights of the marginalized sections of the population, early childhood development and gender equity in education. She started at the Indian Institute of Public Administration (1982-1983), New Delhi as Research Associate and then moved to join the faculty of the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, New Delhi, as Associate Fellow (1983-1989) and later as Fellow (1989-1993). She was engaged in policy development, research and training in educational planning and management and in international comparative education focussing on gender issues, nonformal education, primary and environmental education. She served as Education Specialist with the United Nations Children’s Fund in its Odisha and Tamil Nadu/Kerala state offices (1993-1999) in India and as UNICEF’s Chief of Education Programme in China, Mozambique, and Bangladesh (2000-2015) contributing to innovation in education programmes, planning and policy development. Her contributions in primary and secondary education have been both at strategic levels – on sector reform and policy, institutional development as also in leading teams to design and develop programmes on the ground in teacher education, school and learner quality and in particular, programmes for the most unreached and marginalized children with a strong bent towards intersectoral coordination and change management. Mangalagiri graduated in Economics Honours from Lady Shriram College, New Delhi and did her Masters in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). She completed her M.Phil. and doctoral degrees in Latin American Studies from the School of International Studies at JNU, pursuing her research work in development studies at El Colegio de Mexico; Harvard Business School and the University of Keele in the United Kingdom. Her publications Driving the Change: Towards the Sustainable Development Goal of Education (2023, ed) and Quality and Inclusion in Education: The Persisting Challenges (2024, ed), provoke reflection on the critical dimensions of reducing educational inequalities and instituting sustainable changes in educational development for marginalized communities. She is currently working on an edited volume entitled From Subsistence to Post-Modernism: The Social Anthropology of Bikram Narayan Nanda.
